Kathleen Flowers Memorial Celebration Update:

Sunday, May 3rd at the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church
517 Center Street, Santa Cruz
3:30 – 5:30 pm – Memorial Celebration inside Church
After 5:30 pm – Please bring your poems, stories and photos to share after 5:30 on the ‘Open Mic’.

Paid parking should be available across the street from the Church.

Please bring a flower if you’d like, and share it with another visitor at the end of the ceremony. Also, if you wish, please bring an altar offering, and then take it home with you at the end of the ceremony.

There will be appetizers and sweets following the formal service at 5:30 pm. We have had requests to bring food. While nothing is expected, Kathleen always appreciated a good potluck! Please bring finger food for easy serving.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be sent to any of 3 organizations.

3) DeLaveaga Elementary School, where Kathleen helped pioneer the Dual Immersion program. The funds will be used to create a Kathleen Flowers Poetry Section in the library for the children, and also plant a nectarine tree.

Kathleen is getting prepped now for surgery, and will go in at least an hour and a half earlier than originally planned. We will keep you all posted!

Kathleen is having a PET scan right now.

This is Kathleen’s brother Brian and his lovely wife Meg, and their beautiful daughter Breegan. Brian and Meg are to be given credit for this blog site and Kathleen enjoys walking down to the computer area with ‘R2D2’ (as she calls her IV stand) and reading your wonderful comments and seeing the pictures.

Kathleen is scheduled to have a PET scan on Monday. A PET scan is a heat sensitive diagnostic tool, that can show cancer as heat on the display. She is scheduled to go into surgery on Wednesday.

She has been able to get to a computer every day, so keep those posts coming!! It gives her motivation to get up an and walk down the hallway – like a big blanket of love, she says!

Thanks all for staying in touch with her. It’s like you are all here with her.

In celebration of the Muse (25th Anniversary) – is tomorrow night, Saturday, March 10th at the Cabrillo College Theater.

Ella, Kathleen’s niece, will be reading Kathleen’s poem in the program! Adrienne Rich and 25 other local, women prose & poetry writers will also be reading. The event starts at 7PM and tickets are available at Bookshop Santa Cruz.

This is a fundraiser to benefit Fast Track to Work.

Kathleen is still waiting for a room to open up at a UCSF hospital. Frustration growing.

Unfortunately, it does not look as if Kathleen is going to San Francisco tonight for surgery – however, you never know. It’s now a waiting game for a room to open up. Will post again in the morning, when hopefully there will be a gameplan.

I read her the comments posted on this blog so far, and she was so touched and appreciative. Thank you & keep them coming! Hopefully we can get her access to a laptop/internet soon in her room so she can correspond with you all directly!

Thank you for the organized effort to bring Kathleen some CD’s! That is super thoughtful! She has also expressed interest in “happy & light movies” for entertainment as well. Please make sure to put your name and phone number on the CD’s/DVD’s, so that we can get them back to you!!

UPDATE: 3/5 6:09pm – Just spoke w/ Kathleen & she says she has enough CD’s for now, but thank you!! She would love some funny movies to keep her entertained. Thanks everyone!
